Poland is a DOLPHINARIUM-FREE COUNTRY!
We are very PROUD of it!
"Poland holds no dolphins in captivity and has not approved any dolphinaria for construction there.
It does, however, include dolphinaria in its national zoo legislation, which also includes standards specific to dolphins, including pool size and water quality. We hope Poland will remain dolphinarium-free.
Poland currently holds the Presidency of the European Union until 31st December 2011. And on another critical note for cetaceans, the EU is currently discussing the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy which is needed to address the bycatch of marine mammals within European waters.
Poland is a Member to ASCOBANS, the Agreement for the Conservation of Small Cetaceans in the North and Baltic Seas. Of particularly grave concern in the ASCOBANS region is the decline of harbour porpoises in the Baltic Sea, whose population is critically endangered and thought to consist of only 600 animals. It faces extinction if no serious action is taken on the threats it faces, which includes bycatch. The Parties to ASCOBANS have endorsed what is called the Jastarnia Plan to engage in the recovery of the species, but whether conservation efforts will be successful is yet to be proven."
